Scientific name: Trametes versicolor
Substrate Preference:
Best Substrates: Hardwood logs (preferably oak or chestnut), hardwood sawdust.
Growing Conditions: Turkey Tail mushrooms prefer a slightly cooler climate with temperatures between 15-25°C (59-77°F) and high humidity (~85%).
Cultivation Tips:
Incubation: Inoculate logs or sawdust blocks by drilling holes and injecting the Turkey Tail liquid culture. For sawdust, thoroughly mix the culture into the substrate. Seal the holes with wax and place the substrate in a shaded, cool area. The mycelium will take 3-6 months to fully colonize the logs or sawdust.
Fruiting: Turkey Tail mushrooms are naturally slow-growing, but they will fruit best when exposed to indirect light and adequate airflow. Humidity should remain high, and you can encourage fruiting by placing the logs or sawdust in a shaded area with natural air exchange. The fruiting process can take several weeks to months, so patience is key.
Harvesting: Turkey Tail mushrooms are generally harvested for their medicinal properties. Harvest the mushrooms when the caps are firm and colorful, cutting them close to the substrate. Avoid letting them become too tough, as they are best harvested when still pliable.
